What to Expect in ADHD Counseling

How I Help People Refocus and Discover Ways to Thrive

Whether you’ve never received a diagnosis or have known your whole life, getting the right help can make a difference. I offer ADHD counseling with integrated ADHD coaching to help you tackle the biggest challenges most Adults with ADHD face. Together, I will help you:

Establish a healthier way to relate to difficult emotions and feelings that are holding you back

Sometimes the relationship we have with our emotions and feelings can keep us stuck. We will work on establishing a more compassionate and effective way for experiencing what is difficult while integrating helpful practices for moving forward.

Develop a more flexible & Compassionate mindset

We will examine and cultivate a more flexible, adaptable, and compassionate mindset that allows you to take action in the direction you want your life to go.

Create an environment where you can thrive

Sometimes our environment needs a “make over”. We will examine how your current environment may be setting you up to struggle. We will identify what is in your direct control and re-design aspects of your life that better meet your needs.

Design and integrate helpful systems for improved daily functioning

Identify what is not working and integrate new systems you can fall back on to move you through the day and get your closer to achieving that life you want.

I have proper training and experience conducting psychological assessments and providing diagnosis for the purpose of guiding the achievement of your therapeutic goals in counseling. I also provide work or school paperwork/written requests for accommodations within limited circumstances. It’s important to read the instructions and policies on your requested documentation to verify I’m the correct provider to complete the documentation.

I am not able to provide ADHD evaluations for disability applications through social security.

Coaching never includes therapy, but therapy can include coaching. ADHD coaches may help you with skills development and practice, but are not qualified to assist in processing and working through psychological challenges that often present with ADHD. ADHD counseling can provide a comprehensive way to process and work through difficult thoughts, emotions, feelings, and behaviors that are creating barriers to living a life that aligns with your goals and values. By integrating active coaching, we can also address practical skills, habits, and tools to promote a full life.

I use a Cognitive Behavioral and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Training approach to my work with adults struggling with ADHD. These are more active forms of counseling that include coaching interventions and practices that help target executive dysfunction, emotional regulation and flexibility, memory challenges, and behaviors or habits. At the start of our counseling work, we will develop workable goals and outline a plan for achieving these goals. It acts as a “roadmap” for how we will work together and what you can expect. This can look very different for each client because ADHD can show up differently for everyone. However, for most, this often means we will meet twice a week to balance time between therapeutic processes for developing more adaptive thinking and ways of relating to emotions so that the integration of practice skills, tools, and strategies are more likely to “stick” or become easier to utilize.

Yes! ADHD often affects motivation and task initiation. We’ll explore why these challenges occur and develop strategies to make tasks feel more manageable, reduce overwhelm, and create systems that work with your brain instead of against it.

No. Many adults suspect they have ADHD but have never been formally diagnosed. Whether you have a diagnosis or not, if you struggle with focus, organization, impulsivity, or emotional regulation, counseling can still be beneficial.

I am equipped to assess and diagnose ADHD. I will share more about your concerns and help you determine if ADHD is something you’re experiencing.

No. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor and am qualified to provide counseling services, not medication services. Prescription services are only provided by medically trained clinicians such as Psychiatrists and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners. These are specialists who have completed medical school in psychiatry or psychiatric nursing.

ADHD medication can be an extremely beneficial way to manage ADHD symptoms. I believe it’s important to view medication as a personal decision that only you can make for yourself once provided with all of the information for making that decision. This is a decision I encourage you to explore with a Psychiatrist or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (those who may prescribe psychiatric medications). As with any medication, there are benefits and costs that can only be weighed by you and your provider. I work with those who are on medication for ADHD as well as those who are not on medication for ADHD.
